For many writers, it is daunting to get the word out about their new book. I am told an effective way is to send out a press release. That way, it can go through numerous websites, social media, bloggers, publishers, and even more. You can get the word out faster and easier to more people, and sometimes you can get people contacting you for an interview. Another effective way is to have a digital press release on your website, so it will be easier for bloggers or journalists to contact you. In the first section below, I list how to create a press release. The second part lists sites to submit your press release.
When I decided to write a memoir about what it’s like having a mild intellectual disability, I was a little unsure how to get started. At the time, I was attending a creative writing course, and the teacher gave me suggestions about what direction to take and how to get started. First, I had to research the topic for my book and prove to everyone I knew what I was talking about. Providing information about myself wasn’t enough. I was advised to provide helpful hints for individuals who have learning challenges. She also indicated what topics to include like how to get diagnosed, how a person gets a disability, and how a Mild Intellectual Disability is different from a learning disability. It was a starting point for my book.
I would like to take a little break from the usual blogging, and talk a little about the Christmas holiday. Many of us celebrate this special holiday, but I believe many people lose sight what it really means. I see so many people excited for the Christmas, wondering what they would get under the tree. The stores are busy with shoppers, offering great deals to entice more spending. The stores are packed, even finding a parking space is quite difficult. As great as it is to get a gift, that shouldn’t be the main focus.
Many writers are pursuing their dream of becoming a writer, but they are taken advantage of. I find it sad they spend months writing a book and then end up being scammed. Before you decide to submit your book to an agent or self-publish, do your research. Find out if there are any complaints about any of these individuals or companies. There is a site called Predators & Editors, a nonprofit organization, as a resource for people with creativity (ex: artists or writers). From what I understand, it was started in 1997 by Dave Kuzminski.
Many writers complete their book, have it edited professionally, and are now looking to be represented to have their work published. First of all, congratulations on completing your book!
Now the daunting task is to look for a publisher or an agent. Many publishers accept authors that are referred by an agent. However, there are publishers that will accept unsolicited submissions from authors. However, they must first submit a query letter. They won’t accept a manuscript. I think if you have a great query letter, publishers or agents will be willing to look at your manuscript. That being said, even if a publisher or agent doesn’t accept your work, keep looking until you get results.
Good news, everyone. I am almost caught up with everything. What a relief. I have been so busy, I barely have time for myself. I am glad that now things are slowing down. I even recently got a new computer so there are some files I need to transfer. From now on, I will do things slowly and work at my own pace. Now that most of the other things are out of the way, I can focus on my writing and blogging again. Yay!
It has been a while since I have blogged here. Since I have moved, I have been so busy. And it was all very unexpected. When we moved in, I noticed lots of holes in the wall all over the house. Apparently the previous owner liked to hang lots of stuff, like picture frames. I had to use putty filler to fill the holes. I thought I could get paint samples to patch them up, but I couldn’t get a similar matching colour.
My mom and I realized we had to get a painter to repaint the whole house. My mom’s priest recommended a painter who was not that pricey. He came over, and we told him what we wanted done. He was nice enough to give us a discount because we’re on a fixed budget. I am happy with the colour selection we chose. I don’t think he’s the best. I found a few places that had dried paint drops. He claimed that was from the previous owners when they painted the house, but I don’t believe him. They weren’t there before it was painted, so it must be from him. You can see the picture I included, so you’ll know what I mean. At least, though, it looks much better than before when we moved in.
It’s been some time since I posted. I wanted to share a little about what is going on, and then it will be a few weeks until I post again. Right now, things are really busy. It is quite difficult to engage on social media when I don't have much time. I don't know how so many writers get up in the morning and start writing right away. They spend 5-10 minutes every day, and then post their content with no problem. It takes me a lot of time to think of things to write, even if it's just to tweet. I have to prepare a few days ahead of time so I know what to talk about.
I wanted to inform everyone that I will not be posting blogs for a little while. My father recently passed away after a battle with lung cancer. At first when I heard the bad news, it was a complete shock. As anyone who is going through or has gone through the death of a loved one, there are so many emotions. You wonder what went wrong, and it takes time to get over the grief.
Now that my book is complete, the question is whether to go through a traditional publisher or self-publishing. I contacted a few publishers, but unfortunately, my book wasn’t what they were looking for. Some of them stated it’s not the right time, and they are simply swamped with manuscripts. To begin with, however, I started researching publishers, and what things I needed to send. Many publishers/agents require the person to send a cover page, synopsis, and sample chapter. Along with that, a person has to compare their book to others and include statistics of success in that genre. I found that with the challenges I have, this would be too difficult for me. There is lots of research to do, and I would be competing with other authors who may be more qualified than me.
These blog posts focus on a variety of topics dealing with writing, promoting, marketing, and more.
